College of Charleston 250th

Commemorative Stamp Campaign

Take part in the campaign to have the U.S. Postal Service issue a FOREVER stamp in 2020 commemorating the College of Charleston's 250th anniversary.

In 2020, the College of Charleston community will commemorate and reflect on the College’s 250 years of achievements and its vision for the future. To memorialize this momentous occasion, in January 2017, former President Glenn F. McConnell submitted an application for a commemorative postage stamp, such as the proposed image submitted below:

250th Anniversary Commemorative Stamp Proposal

The College of Charleston submitted a proposal to the United States Postal Service in January 2017, requesting the issue of a stamp in 2020 commemorating the College's 250th anniversary. Subsequently, the proposal was endorsed through resolutions offered by both the City of Charleston and the Charleston County Council.

Read the official proposal, as well as the city and county resolutions, and a student bill by the CofC SGA, in the documents below:

Letter Writing Campaign

One of the best ways for alumni to support this commemorative stamp campaign for the College of Charleston's 250th anniversary is to simply write a letter to the Citizens Stamp Advisory Committee (CSAC). Some of the first to send a letter of support were the South Carolina Congressional delegation and Charleston Mayor John Tecklenburg, as well as the current president of the College of Charleston Alumni Association, Michael Renault. Their letters can all be viewed in the documents below:

The College of Charleston Alumni Association requests that all alumni send a letter of support for the College of Charleston 250th commemorative stamp to the Citizens Stamp Advisory Committee. In your letter, please include how you would use such a FOREVER stamp (for your business mail, graduation invitations, wedding invitations, holiday cards, etc.). The marketability of the stamp weighs heavily in the USPS decision. Letters should be addressed to:

Citizens Stamp Advisory Committee
c/o Stamp Development
475 L'Enfant Plaza SW
Room 3300
Washington, DC 20260-3501

Please send a photo, scan, or .pdf document of your letter to alumni@cofc.edu so we can track support. Examples of letters that have been written to date by alumni are below:

Letters should be sent as soon as possible to demonstrate strong support for the commemorative stamp from the nearly 90,000 living alumni of the College of Charleston. If you have any questions about writing a letter, please send an email to alumni@cofc.edu.
